Raj Chaudhuri Paints the Grand Canyon.

The Weather at the Grand Canyon literally changes by the hour. Painting there was so insightful and challenging. Doing several studies trying to capture the light with the value relationship and colors was the goal.

Given Covid in 2020, the canyon was probably at 40% capacity so the hiking and viewing were spectacular. I felt so moved to see these large mountains, rock walls, and canyons. I felt like we were so insignificant in terms of time and space. The scale is so immense. Breathtaking for me as an artist. I have to say this is one of my favorite places on earth. So unique. Intense and calm at the same time.

Indian Garden  28" x 48" oil in canvas

What a privilege to paint this landscape. Doing several studies and actually, a video for the Made For Artists on this subject, this large landscape (pictured above) has slowly emerged. Working on it, slowing down, putting myself back in the canyon, and picturing it. Focusing on the abstract/shape elements of the painting. The edges in this painting play a critical part in its viewing. The painting is about the light value shape with its yellowish, reddish, greenish mother color driving the design.
