Navajo Squash Blossom Necklace with Old Burnham Turquoise Nuggets, Circa 1950's at Saks Galleries

Silver & Old Burnham Turquoise Nuggets, Circa 1950's.

This circa 1950’s Navajo squash blossom necklace features approximately 400 cts. of some very rare and hard American turquoise - Old Burnham nuggets. The Burnham Mine (also called the Godber-Burnham Mine) was discovered in 1932. It was a ‘hat mine’, so called because you could put your hat over the mine to disguise the entrance. At an elevation of 6,900 feet near Austin, Lander County, Nevada, it was not easily accessible. The mine was sold to Frank Burnham in 1932 and then to Walter Godber in 1934. Oscar Branson in his book ‘Turquoise’ has called Godber-Burnham “some of the finest turquoise in Nevada”. Only small amounts of this high grade material have ever been produced.

Welcome Colorado Oil Painter, Cheryl St. John to Saks Galleries Cherry Creek

Cheryl St. John "Soaking Up the Sun" 18 x 24 Oil

Please join us in welcoming Cheryl St. John to Saks Galleries Cherry Creek.
Visit the gallery to see her latest works.

Cheryl St. John "Indian Summer" 16 x 20 Oil

Cheryl is a fourth generation Colorado Native, with a great appreciation of nature and the environment and the preservation of both. She is known for her "plein-air" landscapes as well as her breathtaking large landscape paintings created from the plein air studies.

Cheryl says, "It's a bit difficult to paint on a 36 X 48 canvas on location so working from small studies, created in the field is the perfect solution!" Now, she can enjoy being outdoors, which is where she wants to be most of the time, and enjoy the comfort of the studio when she wants to work large. The nice thing about creating a small study on location is it takes me right back to that "special place" so I can create a large work with the same feeling and emotion.

Cheryl St. John "Wild Daises" 16 x 20 Oil
Cheryl is an award-winning artist with multiply achievements, most recently she has been included in the 22nd Annual Oil Painters of American National Exhibition of Traditional Oils.  She also received the honor of being selected the grand prize winner of the "Official Image" of  The Capitol Christmas Tree, permanently displayed in the Art Collection of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C.

Visit the gallery and enjoy Cheryl St. John's latest paintings!

Important Vintage Concho Belt, circa 1950 by David Taliman, Cochiti 1902 - 1967

David Taliman, Cochiti, "Stamped Silver Concho Belt" circa 1950's $2500

David Taliman was a student of Fred Peshlakai, circa 1920, then worked in several shops in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, including Maisel's and Harold Gans' Southwest Indian Arts and Crafts prior to World War II.  He married Anacita Naranjo, a Santa Clara woman, who was the sister of the silversmith for Kohlberg's in Denver, Manuel Naranjo.

Detail of Stamped Concho Belt by David Taliman

The stamping on this concho belt is similar to that of a box in the collection of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian pictured along with Taliman's photo on p.169 of the Native American Curio Trade in New Mexico by Jonathan Batkin.
