Artist Statement
"In the past, I would have an idea for a painting and hold to that idea through to the finish. I could pretty much see the end result before I started. There were no surprises. But now my understanding of the process is that the idea is just the first impulse. From that first impulse forward, improvisation takes over. The end result is not about that first idea, but is instead a record of all those impulses along the way. Each stroke of paint carries emotion and power. I work in a loose, painterly style in part because I want the viewer to see the process and not hide it behind 'finish;' for the viewer to maybe even feel how a particular piece of paint was put down.

Painting is not about reproducing nature. I like the notion that art should have more to do with the communication of the artist's emotions to the viewer through the paint itself. My goal in the work is not to show what I know, but what I feel. The more intensely I can express emotion though paint about the subject, the more likely the viewer will respond. All I can do is make an honest effort and then accept without judgement. To remain neutral about the paintings and to not judge them as good or bad is very important to moving forward.

My best work comes when I'm able to give up control, to trust my impulses. Then the painting takes on a life of its own. When I don't know what is going to happen next, the process becomes full of surprise and wonder."

Barry Eisenach began drawing at an early age and after 23 years as an illustrator and
graphic designer he followed his life long desire to paint and sculpt. Having grown up in
the west, he was naturally drawn to portraying the lives and history of the indigenous
peoples and explorers of this region. Eisenach feels it is a privilege to stand on the
shoulders of the western artists that have come before.

New Arrival! Gordon Brown at Saks Galleries

Growing up in Grand Junction, Colorado, Gordon Brown is well acquainted with the majestic landscape of the West. Choosing to have his studio near where he grew up on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, Brown finds peace and inspiration in the surrounding landscape. From the balcony of his studio at the back of the property, Brown can survey the imposing mountain range. Brown remarks, "There is something about just going to the edge and looking at space and air..."
Throughout his career, Gordon Brown has been influenced by the Tonalist painters of the 19th century. Like these artists, Brown considers it his "responsibility as a painter to record and reveal the natural beauty of the landscape as faithfully as possible." Therefore, he spends a great deal of time in the field studying his subject matter. The photos and small oil studies he does on site are just a reference, however, and bear little resemblance to the canvases he ultimately produces.

Wayne Salge at Saks Galleries

Born, raised and educated in San Antonio, Texas, Wayne now resides in Colorado. In his bronze sculpture, Salge moves beyond anatomically accurate rendering to capture the essence of the personality of a horse, long-horn cattle, or other wildlife. He says of sculpting the horse, "I'm interested mainly in the overall look of the piece - seeing how far I can push the limits and still capture the horse - rather the different areas being correct. My sculpture can become abstract and people still know what they are."

He enjoys finding the balance between the literal and the figurative. "...It's just how I see it," he says of his approach. "Pure abstraction is not as challenging to me. With abstract work you can go in all directions, but that doesn't do as much for me as making something recognizable. In a way it's more of a challenge."

New Work! William Acheff at Saks Galleries

William Acheff is known for his life like perfection portrayed in his realism paintings. Acheff's still-life compositions combine historical and cultural artifacts of the Southwest.
William Acheff was born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1947 and has been living in Taos, New Mexico since 1973. "I paint Indian objects," he says, "because I relate to them, maybe because I have some Indian blood and because I was close to my grandmother, but that's not the point. It's the ethnic quality of the artifacts. There's a purity in them. Nothing's manufactured by machine. There sits a pot. The whole mood of what went into making that pot is a story, and that's what I want to capture."
Acheff has shown in major Western art shows: Western Heritage Sale, Artists of America, National Academy of Western Art, The Hubbard Show, Prix de West, Autry Masters of the American West. He is a two time Prix de West Award winner (1989, 2004) and received the Masters of America West Purchase Award in 1998.
