Sallie K. Smith

Though Sallie K. Smith paints other subjects, she prefers landscapes, and enjoys letting the work speak for her. The gentle yet vibrant images she depicts are inspired by her favorite vistas—most notably, the mountainous views that surround her home—and reflect her reverent admiration for the land. “Nature, to me, is so perfect in every detail; it gives me peace and, at the same time, is exhilarating. I am trying to capture that ethereal sensibility in my work, knowing that these moments of solitude are often fleeting. I invite the viewer to step inside my paintings and enjoy with me these special places.”

Jill Soukup

Jill graduated from Colorado State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Art. There, she received awards for illustration and design and worked as an illustrator and designer for the university. She initially pursued a career in graphic design while continuing to paint part time. After 11 years as a designer, she made the switch to full-time painting. Her work continues to gain recognition as she receives awards, appears in national publications, and shows in important juried and one-woman exhibitions.

"Where and how do I begin my career as a painter? At that time, I did what now is my life’s motto; when I am feeling stuck, I remind myself to just begin. Begin anywhere! My one and only concern was to paint paint paint! Somewhere between the beginning and the many paintings I had created, a voice emerged that was quiet but my own. My work developed into the beauty I wanted to portray.

The inspiration for my paintings come from all around me. Sometimes it can be as simple as a color, other times it can be the way two people are interacting. Whatever it might be, it is used as a building block for the piece. That is when creating an environment that will compliment, emphasize, or perhaps downplay my motive becomes so important to executing that vision. When working through a painting I have experience and tools to use that I have acquired from my past work, but never is the path completely the same. There are always unexpected obstacles that arise. Those little and big bumps give me the opportunity to truly be creative. To create the impossible and let the magic take hold."

Sallie K. Smith's "After the Storm" at Saks Galleries

Sallie K. Smith has several beautiful landscapes in the "Impressions of Fall" exhibition at Saks Galleries. But I wanted to blog about this particular painting of Sallie's for several reasons, mainly because of the story-line behind this piece.

Sallie tells us..."Living in the semi-arid climate of Colorado makes me really appreciate a good downpour. Late one afternoon in Boulder, the sky opened and our town was washed down by a short but powerful rain. On the outskirts of the city these horses, wet with rain, went back about their grazing while the clouds, mist and the setting summer sun created this fresh and peaceful moment."

As Coloradans, we all have an appreciation for the rains or what seems like the monsoon weather patterns of Northern New Mexico these past few weeks. We have been raised with a deep abiding respect for our delicate eco-system and how precious water is out in the West. We are all practicing environmentalist on some level. And while we are concentrating on the ever-changing weather here, in this story, we are gently reminded of the beauty that surrounds us in Colorado, a pastoral setting with the Rocky Mountains in the background, lush green meadows sprinkled with high mountain flowers, and horses grazing on freshly washed sweet grasses that have emerged from the rains.

Surely, we could all enjoy an artful, late summer picnic as the sunset warms us. Send us images of your artful picnic in the Rocky Mountains.

Saks Galleries began representing David Gray shortly after he became a participant in the "American Art Invitational" hosted by the gallery in Denver, Colorado in December of 2010.

Writer, Bonnie Gangelhoff said of Gray in a recent article in Southwest Art Magazine, ..."Whether he is painting still lifes or figures, Gray brings a deep knowledge of and respect for the masters that translates into an elegant minimalism on canvas or panel. His tonalist portraits usually focus solely on the head and shoulders, while his still lifes feature timeless objects surrounded by generous does of negative space." We couldn't have said it better.

Gray's greatest influence is neo-classical artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1790-1867). David suggests the abstract qualities of Ingres paintings are what have encouraged him in his own works. Most patrons recognize a Dutch influence reminiscent of Vermeer's work, especially in the "Muse" painting, presented during the American Art Invitational last December.

There is a quite, simple, calmness to David Gray's paintings. We are pleased to represent him.

"Opening Nights - A Must for the Art Junkie"

There is always something exciting going on in the art world. Denver, Colorado is no exception. Here in the mile-high city, we offer a full breadth of galleries, museums, special events and art festivals. And opening night events are just fun, always have been from The Salons in Paris beginning in 1725, to the New York Art Scene of the mid 1970's, to the very present Denver, Colorado.

The anticipation for those of us who have become professional art addicts or art junkies, as I lovingly refer to them, can't get enough. Is it the intoxicating smell of fresh paint on the canvas, the sheen of patina on a new Dan Glanz sculpture, the inspiration brought on by the site of what your favorite artist has created or the opportunity to mingle with fellow art junkies?

For me, I can't wait to get the chill bumps from unwrapping and seeing a new painting destine for the latest exhibition, then finding the right combination of new works to hang together. The lighting gets tricky sometimes - some works need less light, some need more, but then you ready for the party. What's great about the opening night reception? Everything. The entire process for an art junkie like me is an adrenaline rush. Everyone has a smile on their face, it's a special night - the art is exceptional - the artists are feeling accomplishment and the patrons are satiated.
