(adapted from The Art of Charles Partridge Adams by Dines, Leonard and Cuba, 1993)

Charles Partridge Adams moved to Denver from Massachusetts in 1876 at the age of 18. A year later he began working at the Chain and Hardy bookstore, where he received encouragement for his artistic interests from Helen Henderson Chain, who had been a pupil of the noted artist, George Inness. A three-month camping trip in the Rockies with another young artist in 1881 resulted in numerous sketches and paintings. In 1885 he traveled to the east coast, and visited the studios of George Inness and Worthington Whittredge, and the following year he visited the California studios of William Keith and Thomas Hill. Though not isolated from other artists, Adams was largely self-taught, experimenting with different styles and techniques, continuing to use those that best served his vision and his subject matter.

His paintings were first exhibited publicly in Denver in 1886, and he exhibited work in both local and national shows through 1908. In 1893 Adams established his first Denver studio, and began to paint watercolors in addition to oils. Since watercolors were less expensive, they sold readily. From that time on Adams painted watercolors and oils and was fluent in both mediums.

Arriving Within the Week - Two New Michael Godfrey Snow Scenes at Saks Galleries

Oldest Fine Art Gallery in Colorado

Beautiful Snow Scenes
for the Holidays

Michael Godfrey "The Light of Winter" 9 x 16 Oil

Michael Godfrey "Winter's Blanket" 9 x 16 Oil

Michael Godfrey is a representational landscape artist whose work hangs in many private and corporate collections. Born in Germany in l958 and raised in North Carolina, he earned a BFA in Fine Arts from East Carolina University.

Over the past 25 years Michael Godfrey has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe painting landscapes. He spends hours field sketching and photographing, preparing for a well thought out painting. Typically, he starts a major work using small oil studies done on location. These field studies provide color accuracy and photographs provide special details. Godfrey composes his paintings from on site sketches in the field and photography references.

In studio, work progresses in successive layers of paint and light is orchestrated to create a painting that appeals to his internal sense of order. “A landscape artist has to have some knowledge of many disciplines (geology, chemistry, physics, architecture), to understand the world in which they are trying to create. An artist must observe with the idea that what is observed must be interpreted and distilled. For a landscape artist, it is just as important what you do not include in a work as what is eventually laid down.

The American Art Invitational 2012 presents painter Natalie Featherston, One of the country's most innovative and accomplished young artists, Natalie Featherston works exclusively in the centuries old realm of still life to create dazzling narrative and trompe l'oeil paintings that combine the virtuosity of a Dutch Master with the vision of a thoroughly modern mind. The Chicago Sun Times has described her paintings as "artful beyond just illusion and trickery; they are truly masterful still lifes made with both craft and wit."

"What inspires me most is the creative voice that still life gives. Unlike portraits or landscapes, still life doesn't simply exist around us. You have to actually build the stage for the painting and select the subjects, colors, and textures. The end result must arrive at something that draws the viewer into an invented realm that connects with their experiences in a meaningful way. I have always found still life painting to be quite a challenge for these very reasons, and although it may qualify me for the 'one-trick-pony' category, I can't imagine painting anything else."

Salge "Plough" Bronze Ed of 12

Salge "Walkie-Talkie" Bronze
"....Among the show’s three-dimensional offerings are small sculptures by Colorado-based artist Wayne Salge. Salge’s distinctive elongated figures speak of gesture, movement, rhythm, and line, where the essence of the human or animal is pared down into engaging, abstracted form. WALK ON, for example, was inspired by the sight of increasing numbers of people out walking quickly for exercise. Salge, whose name is pronounced sol-ghee, often starts with a quick sketch but then works spontaneously, allowing the process to guide his hands as he creates and connects shapes. “It’s all about lines, following lines up the piece, and sharp angles allow me to do that,” he explains."

Other Sculptors include: Babette Bloch, Tim Cherry, Jane DeDecker, Daniel Glanz, T.D. Kelsey, Dan Ostermiller, Rosetta, Sherry Salari Sanders, Tim Shinabarger and Pati Stajcar.

Sallie K. Smith
represented by

Moraine Park Autumn, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Ms. Smith says,  "The vast beauty of Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park has been the subject of paintings for over 100 years.  This painting for me was about capturing the wide array of vibrant colors that were evident here on a beautiful Fall afternoon.  I am amazed at how many ways this classic Colorado location has been interpreted by painters over the years."

Colorado landscape artist, Sallie K. Smith will be demonstrating her painting techniques, Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Saks Galleries Cherry Creek, Denver, Colorado.  Sallie's demonstration coincides with the American Art Invitational hosted each year by Saks Galleries.  Sallie has two small landscapes presented in the annual exhibition now presented through December 31, 2012.

Sallie will share her plein aire painting experiences while hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. An avid hiker, Sallie K. Smith finds the unique and less traveled scenery of one our national treasures.
